The Practice and Promise of Social Cooperatives

Available now!

After a year of hard work, we're excited to release our new research report, "The Practice and Promise of Social Cooperatives", the first such comparative study of social co-ops for a U.S. audience.

Friends of the RMEOC are already somewhat familiar with this topic because of our launch of the Driver's Co-op--CO, which is in fact a social co-op, as we describe in this report.

A downloadable PDF is here.

Here's some of what's inside:

  • "Social Cooperatives and the Solidarity Economy"--an overview by Rebecca Matthew (U. of Georgia)
  • "Regional Case Studies: Emilia Romagna, South Korea, Quebec"--Matthew Epperson, Minsun Ji, Elias Crim
  • "Social Franchising as a Model for Scaling"--from Maru Bautista, co-op consultant
  • "Cooperative Ecosystem Development: The Industrial Commons"--Sara Chester, Amy Vaughn, Aaron Dawson
  • "Key Sectors in the U.S.: Home Care Co-ops and Disadvantaged Rideshare Drivers"--Katrina Kazda (ICA Group) and Minsun Ji (Drivers Co-op--CO)
  • "Social Co-ops and the Role of Social Value Markets"--John Restakis, co-founder Synergia Institute

To be part of this growing conversation and field-building work, join our Social Co-op Community of Practice zoom sessions the first Wednesday of the month at noon-1 PM EST.
