Drivers Cooperative Colorado: A Major Incubation Program of RMEOC

One of our most ambitious and impactful incubation projects is Drivers Cooperative Colorado (DCC)—the only worker-owned on-demand rideshare cooperative in the U.S.

Why the Drivers

Cooperative Colorado?

Rideshare drivers in Colorado and beyond struggle with unpredictable wages, excessive commission fees, unjust deactivations, poor working conditions, and job insecurity. DCC is changing that by putting drivers in the driver’s seat—literally and financially.

The Problems

Unfair Wages for Drivers

Rideshare drivers in the Boulder- Denver Metro area earned between $5.49 an $10.53 per hour in 2022/23 (minimum hourly wage in Denver in 2022 was $15.87). Only 14% of what customers are charged goes to drivers.

Unjust Deactivations

Drivers --and especially drivers of color-- are penalized by discriminatory algorithms. They are often unjustly deactivated.

Poor Service of Marginalized Communities

Marginalized communities, such as elderly, refugee and disabled communities, are often overlooked in urban and socioeconomic planning. Their transportation needs go unmet due to high prices and other limitations.

How DCC Works

DCC operates just like major rideshare platforms but with one key difference: the drivers own the company. Members retain 80% of the trip fare and have a voice in decision-making by serving on and electing the board of directors and different committees. Through DCC, wealth stays in the local economy!

Beyond economic justice for drivers, DCC is committed to serving marginalized and underserved communities, providing reliable transportation options where they are needed most. By reinvesting in local economies, the cooperative is not just transforming the rideshare industry—it’s creating a more equitable future for Colorado workers and riders.

RMEOC’s Role in Incubating DCC

The incubation of the cooperative started in 2022, leading to the launch of the coop in 2025. Through the years, and despite the many challenges and pivots, hundreds of drivers joined the movement to transform the industry, riders began discovering the platform, and the community rallied behind the mission for a fairer, driver-owned future.

To support DCC, RMEOC is providing:

Strategic Guidance and Management Support

Helping shape the cooperative’s governance and business structure.

Fundraising & Financial Planning

Securing grants, investments, and a crowdfunding campaign to sustain operations.

Recruitment, Education, Outreach

Training drivers on cooperative principles and business ownership as we work to expand the membership count.

Tech & Infrastructure Support

Assisting in the development of the DCC rideshare app and backend operations.
